About Me

I'M Julie Rodriguez Jones

I've always had a interest in art but didn't get serious about it until almost middle age.  At the Berkeley School of the Arts, I studied under Gwyneth Welch, Lien Truong, and Arngunner Yr.

When I started publishing my art it began with astronomical and space art and transitioned to adding large format banners primarily for churches, custom cotton clergy stoles printing our own fabric, and most recently I've added "watercolor" flowers and other botanical subjects.

Over the years my art has been shown in magazines and in books such as The Beauty of Space, Women of Space and, The Art of Space and others.  Several book covers have been commissioned including Grandfather's Song, A New Dawn and more.  An Illustrated children's book, Beau's Dragon, was one of my largest projects.  My poster Beneath the Moon was the grand prize winner at Ironstone Vineyards and promoted their wine for the following year. My illustration of Terre Beau Winery can be seen on their bottle of Enchanted dessert Wine. I've also created logos, advertising posters and so much more.

 Please enjoy your stay here!

My art business has been designated as a "Trusted Art Seller" with The Art Storefronts Organization, which means you can shop with confidence, and know that I stand behind the quality and value of my products.

Inspiration

My inspiration comes from a variety of sources.

Here plants and botanical "watercolors" are mainly from near where I live in Nevada and from the homes of my friends in the San Francisco East Bay in California where I was raised.

My astronomical and space art is almost exclusively creative but based on a number of years of observations.

My sunrises and sunsets are from my local area in Washoe County, Nevada. These are often very different from the ordinary as we are surrounded by the Sierra Nevada Mountains.

My large format banners are created from years of faith and though my background is in the United Church of Christ, I honor all faiths and religions in my creations.

Techniques

Throughout these pages you will find a few pieces that started off with traditional, "real" media such as colored pencil.  Starting around 2000 I transitioned to creating on a blank screen and drew everything from my father's tools by hand (on the screen) to flowers and other subjects. When my family moved to Nevada in 2004, I added photography to my resume and began photographing the spectacular sunrises and sunsets that are seen from where I live at the 4500' level near the Sierra Nevada Mountains. My newest subjects are "watercolor" plants and other botanicals using a variety of digital watercolor brushes and techniques.

career highlights

There have been some exciting steps along the art path since my early retirement from the University of Calif. Lawrence Berkeley Lab as a specialist in writing research and development contracts for collaborative research.  The other side of my brain ached to be exercised.

After being accepted into my first shows (after studying art for a number of years) and receiving my first awards, a very fond memory was receiving the Grand Prize at Ironstone Vineyards in 2004. (It was more than which I could have dreamed.)  I was also encouraged by being selected as one of only thirteen artists in a world-wide competition of placescapes. My "place" just happened to be off-planet. Following this was both being invited to create several book covers, having my art requested to be in several books and magazines, and later illustrating some books.  Books are are huge undertakings with some risk, but have been so artistically rewarding.  Receiving commissions are equally challenging and rewarding for me.  I now look forward to creating more flower paintings in the future.
